Understanding the Technical Variables
-
Light is painted on the retina of the eye, film or the sensor and then on the monitor, paper or screen
-
The painting is controlled by the (natural) quantity of light (as modified by you)
-
And the (natural) quality of light (as modified by you)
The Technical Variables Are...
-
ISO and ISO equivalents (film or digital sensor sensitivity) …for film this is ISO/ASA 25 to 800 (or more) and for digital cameras from ISO 100 to 1600 (or more…)
-
- Generally, subject and camera movement is your enemy...
- The ability to stop movement increases as the shutter speed increases
- The ability to create artistic blurs and the sense of movement can (with skill) increase with slower shutter speed
-
Aperture (the size of the opening in the lens) expressed as f stops and the implications to depth of field and sharpness
- f/1.4 to f/32
- “Depth of Field” (depth of focus) increases as the aperture gets smaller and the f number gets larger for any lens.
- The longer the focal length of the lens, the narrower the inherent/available depth of field

How about some more photos that (hopefully) highlight the mastery of the technical variables?
